Mark the serial number as unverified. Describe the equipment and location. Send the identity question to your equipment reviewer. Do not guess a number. Do not copy one from a nearby tank to fill the field.
Make the uncertainty visible
For an exception record, we suggest noting which marking was hard to read and why. Add only facts the worker can check. Do you use a temporary internal ID? Label it that way. It is not the maker’s serial number.
