How Do You Train a New Propane Driver on Gas Checks?

Train a new propane driver with a written task list, a qualified trainer and supervised practice on the work assigned. Check the driver's skill before assigning work alone. Keep the training and test record. Tank Spotter keeps that training history in one place. Use it to keep the training record.

Define the job before the lesson

List what the new driver will do and what remains outside the role. Have the safety lead choose the approved procedures and the person who will supervise practice.

Use a training plan for actual tasks, not just a list of videos to watch. Ask the trainer to record the result of each skill check.

Keep the DOT timing in scope

Under 49 CFR 172.704(c)(1), a new hazmat employee may do covered tasks before training is complete. A properly trained, knowledgeable hazmat employee must directly supervise that work. Training must be complete within 90 days after hire or a change in job function. This rule does not let a new driver work alone.

Build a record the office can find

Link the task, trainer and result to the worker. Tank Spotter lists completed training and training history. Use the product page to compare that record view with your program.

Keep the full review of the driver's skills separate from the video-viewing record.

Questions and answers

Does watching a video clear someone for field work?

Do not use viewing alone as your sign-off. Have the trainer assess the assigned skills under the reviewed program.

Can a new hazmat employee work before training is complete?

Only with the direct supervision the cited rule requires and training complete within 90 days after hire or a change in job function. Check all other qualifications for the assigned work.

Who should approve work without the trainer?

Name that authority in your program. Require the person to review the completed task and skill records.

What should we review after the first week?

As a coaching practice, look at incomplete tasks and unclear records with the trainer. Set the next supervised steps from those findings.
